Jealousy – an intense feeling which makes you feel unhappy, and sometimes even embarrassed, and we’ve all felt it. Often times, we’ve wanted to have and do things which other people have already done or experienced.
We can feel jealous for different reasons. Some can feel a pang of jealousy when they see their partner surrounded by or in the company of someone of the opposite sex. Others can be jealous of their friends’ high social status or achievements at a personal and professional level.
To curb jealousy can be quite difficult. It’s even harder when we have to deal with other people’s feelings of jealousy. Getting angry or shouting at those who are jealous of us won’t fix the problem. If we approach the issue having strong reactions, we could only worsen the whole situation.
Yet, in order to handle this uncomfortable situation properly, you need to know what behaviors jealous people display. If you know how they behave in a particular situation, it’ll be easier for you to find a way to deal with it.
The following is a list of 7 signs which show that someone is jealous of you:
1. They enjoy gossiping about you.
That they love gossiping about you shouldn’t surprise you. The thing is that since they allow themselves to talk about you behind your back, they’ll say unkind and mean things to denigrate your success.
The author James Clear explains that people’s negativity can make you doubt in yourself and get filled with anger and negative emotions. Negativity will also become the focus of your thoughts, thereby preventing you from achieving success.
So, don’t let gossips affect you negatively because you can’t control what these people talk about you. What you should simply do is talk openly to them and tell them you’re aware of what they’re doing.
2. They brag about their success.
I’m sure you’ve met many people who just enjoy flaunting their success, especially while you’re celebrating yours. Probably the reason for this is that they’re less successful than you. Author Bob Bly remarks that there will always be those who think negatively about people they envy, including themselves and their failure to accomplish their goals often related to achieving material or financial success.
To stop them from further doing this, you can praise them honestly. In this way you’ll show them that everyone can find ways to be successful and that feeling envy is completely unnecessary.
3. They underestimate your success.
People who are jealous of you will always try to make your success look like a small thing. They’ll want to make you believe that you don’t deserve to be credited with putting in a lot of effort to achieve success.
Instead of trying to justify yourself and explaining things, try to avoid doing things which can make people jealous of you, like buying or wearing very expensive things. If you behave modestly, jealous people won’t see you as a threat to their social standing.
4. They praise you insincerely.
How can you expect from a person who is jealous of you to give you honest compliments? They can praise you right in front of your eyes, but they don’t mean anything they say.
To make them aware that one can really be proud of someone else’s success without feeling envy is to do the contrary thing. Praise them sincerely when they achieve something.
5. They feel good about your failures.
Don’t doubt that those who are jealous of you will always celebrate your failures. The fact that you didn’t do something the right way or failed to achieve the thing you wanted can make them really happy.
If you show that your failure has demoralized and made you feel sad, this will increase their satisfaction of seeing you in a bad mood. Instead, try to show confidence and tell them that making mistakes is normal and we learn from them.
6. They want to be like you.
Someone who’s jealous of you will try to imitate you so that they could be as good as you or even better. They can walk, talk or dress the way you do.
Yet, don’t let this irritate you. Instead, tell them that they can be their own person and still be good. You can even encourage them to do something original.
7. They like competing with you.
When it comes to jealous people, it’s all about competing. Their insatiable need to be always better and more successful than you will make them compete even for the smallest insignificant things. The reason for this is that they feel insecure and have low self-esteem, especially when they fail to achieve something.
To stop their competition games just make them know that you don’t want to participate. Not everything in life is about competing and showing whether one person is better or not than the other one.
